I am trained as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP). This means I am a Registered Nurse (RN) with advanced training (a Masters and a Doctorate) in providing psychiatric care, including prescribing medications. Because of this, I may have a different approach than Psychiatrists (MD, DO) you have seen. However, my responsibility to you is identical: quality, consistent care. Treatment decisions will always be methodical and careful–I do not simply provide a rotating selection of medications that might make you feel like a "guinea pig". I take a collaborative and psychoeducational approach–instead of dictating what you should do, our decisions are shared.

I provide psychiatric evaluation and medication management, typically integrating brief therapy in each of our visits. I particularly enjoy and excel working with young adults and other medical professionals.

My prescribing tends to be conservative. Too many end up on multiple medications, layered upon one another unnecessarily. This is not how I practice. Comprehensive assessment, including detailed review of your history and what is important to you, means I will get to know you well to allow more precision in our treatment.

I pride myself on conducting a thorough, comprehensive initial evaluation and interview with you. I see this as an investment from each of us to start your care with the most accurate diagnosis possible as this will guide us in our next steps. We will schedule 90 minutes for this evaluation, during which we will talk about the following:

  • What brings you to seek psychiatric care, with plenty of time to talk about what is important to you;

  • Some guided questions about related history that help with making a diagnosis;

  • Discussion of your family and personal history;

  • Review of your past psychiatric and mental health care;

  • Review of your medical history, including any medications or supplements you take, any health conditions you may have, and other physical health issues that might relate to your psychiatric concerns;

  • Initial impressions of a likely diagnosis, with discussion of other possibilities we may need to look into further over time;

  • Suggestions for treatment including medications, psychotherapy, supplements, and others; and

  • When to follow up and other next steps.

We will then have regular follow-up visits to monitor your medications and see how you are doing. I will not just ask “how are your meds” – that is ridiculous and impersonal. It is important to talk about what else is going on in your life that might influence our treatment decisions, so each follow-up will be personal with time for you to share what you feel important. These visits will be scheduled for 25 minutes and end with a review of your options and our plan of care going forward.

In order to provide your care I will need you to make some specific commitments, including:

  • Being ready and on-time for each appointment;

  • Following all of the policies that will be provided to you once we decide to go ahead and start working together;

  • Being honest and forthcoming including about some topics you might find sensitive—though I will never pressure you to talk about things you are you not ready to discuss;

  • Providing payment before the start of each session as detailed below;

  • Taking medications as prescribed, or letting me know right away if you have concerns about your medications;

  • Staying engaged in care with follow-ups at least once every 3 months, or as we discuss;

  • Scheduling with me sooner if we need to talk in detail about anything;

  • Staying engaged with your primary care provider and other medical providers;

  • Getting labs or other things done that we may discuss in our appointments;

  • Feeling open to ask questions about our treatment, including to let me know if you disagree with anything I have talked about with you; and

  • Being an active participant in each appointment and treatment decision.

In return, I pledge the following to you as my patient:

  • Be ready and on-time for each appointment;

  • Provide quality, individualized, compassionate care that involves you in each of our treatment decisions;

  • Provide you treatment that is evidence-based and supported by best practices;

  • Admit when I need to do further research on what may be best for you, and to do that research thoroughly and thoughtfully;

  • Refer you to other providers if at any time that seems necessary and in your best interest;

  • Involve you in each decision and not just telling you what to take or do;

  • Explain every recommendation and discuss alternatives;

  • Consider medical causes for your concerns instead of automatically jumping to adding a medication;

  • Coordinate care with your other providers whenever needed;

  • Absolute respect for your privacy;

  • Timely responses to questions and concerns; and

  • Regular follow-up guided by what it takes to best meet your needs.
